Subject: Support LGBT Protections in Leon County
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I am writing to ask that you support three agenda items sponsored by Commissioner John Dailey that will be presented on July 14th and will provide assistance to members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Community.
I urge you to support the following: (1) Amending the existing Fair Housing Code (Human Rights - Chapter 9) to add gender identity or expression to sexual orientation (which already exists in the code); (2) Provide protection against employment discrimination for the LGBT community with public and private employers, which would provide a private cause of action; (3) Establishing a volunteer LGBT Human Rights Board to advise the commission on LGBT issues (this board would not conduct Hearings).
By approving these broadly supported measures, Leon County will join a long and growing list of cities and counties across Florida that provide discrimination protection in housing and employment to the LGBT community.
There are no state or federal protection from anti-LGBT discrimination. A case can only proceed if there is a city or county ordinance prohibiting LGBT discrimination. That is why we need to add these protections to the County Code.
I know that the Commission does not support discrimination in any form and does not support it against the LGBT community. I ask you to fully support Commissioner John Dailey's measures that will be presented on July 14th.
Sincerely,
|

This coming Tuesday, July 14th, the Leon County Commission will consider a proposal that would expand the County's existing anti-discrimination code to include protections for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.
Fourteen cities and counties across Florida have already enacted such legislation (Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, Key West, Broward County, Palm Beach County, Monroe, County, Orange County, Gainesville, Dunedin, Gulfport, West Palm Beach, Lakeworth, Tequesta, Miami Beach ).
The measures being considered by Commissioners will be a huge benefit to the LGBT community by:(1) Amending the existing Fair Housing Code (Human Rights - Chapter 9) to add gender identity or expression to sexual orientation (which already exists in the code); (2) Provide protection against employment discrimination for the LGBT community with public and private employers, which would provide a private cause of action; (3) Establishing a volunteer LGBT Human Rights Board to advise the commission on LGBT issues (this board would not conduct Hearings).
