Immigration:

Senate Passes Sweeping Bill on Immigration – “The Senate approved a sweeping bill that would upgrade border security and offer a path to citizenship to most illegal immigrants in the U.S.

“The measure calls for 370 miles of triple-layer fencing along the Mexican border, a complicated three-tiered system for determining who can stay and who must leave the country, and more jail cells for those awaiting deportation.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/25/AR2006052501548.html?referrer=email

“It... will test President Bush's ability to lead on an issue that has deeply divided the nation.”

Poverty and Homelessness:

Understanding poverty and homelessness in America: “There are so many definitions of homelessness for so many different programs, no one is quite sure anymore exactly what "homeless" means.” As a result, many families, especially in rural areas, aren’t able to access the services they need. http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0522/p09s01-coop.html?s=hns

In the war on poverty, “it is not the war, it's the poverty we don't understand.” “There are two basic areas of knowledge that offer the greatest illumination to our understanding of poverty in America: (1) The dynamics of poverty how people enter poverty and exit poverty and how long people remain in poverty; and (2) the trigger points that cause people to become poor and the additional trigger points that enable people to rise out of poverty.” http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0522/p09s02-coop.html?s=hns

“Why are Americans so deeply in debt? It's not because they are using credit cards to buy plasma TVs and premium coffee drinks ... The real culprits, according to a new analysis, are the rising costs of housing, health care and education.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/11/AR2006051101779.html

Minimum Wage:

The Massachusetts Senate OK's minimum wage hike – lawmakers unanimously approved a measure yesterday that would increase the state's minimum wage to $8.25 an hour the highest in the country and guarantee future increases tied to hikes in the cost of living.” http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/05/26/senate_oks_minimum_wage_hike/
