Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit NetChoice Coalition. The short explanation of this alert was: HB 558 and S 487 create a new sales tax on digital goods and expand tax burdens on retailers that spend their advertising dollars with North Carolina businesses. The net effect: a new tax on the environmentally-friendly decision to download your movies, music, and books rather than ordering physical copies or picking them up in a store. A digital download is the greenest way to buy music, movies, books, and software. Digital downloads don't require a round-trip drive to the store, delivery vans, plastics and packaging. A recent study commissioned for the European Union found that, when you download CDs worth of music, your carbon footprint is only 1.3lbs. But if you were to drive to a store and buy a physical CD, you'd use up almost THREE TIMES the amount of natural resources. Now is your chance to tell North Carolina that we shouldn't be taxing innovative forms of distribution that are environmentally friendly. Instead, we should be promoting them!
