Legislation has been introduced to fully fund the implementation of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). The bill, HR 2485, specifies annual increases in FDA funding levels for DSHEA, but does not actually give permission for the authorized spending increases for FDA activities. Congressional supporters and detractors of DSHEA have both argued that the FDA is not implementing the dietary supplement law. Supporters want more money to ensure this while detractors prefer to use the FDA’s lack of performance as a reason to repeal law and regulate supplements more like drugs.  This legislation is a positive vehicle to force Congressional detractors to take a real position instead of speechifying against DSHEA.
