The short explanation of this alert was:

AB 374, The California Compassionate Choices Act, will give terminally ill patients the right to decide their own end-of-life choices. The people of California now have an opportunity to take control of a fundamental personal choice that is being strongly opposed and heavily lobbied by the “Religious Right”. Although heated opposition to this personal right is not surprising, the religious and conservative extremist opposition is using misleading and inaccurate claims as scare tactics to discourage legislators from voting what is clearly the will of the people of California.

The issue at stake is whether each of us, at the end of our lives, is able to choose whether to continue in hopeless suffering or use medication to ease that suffering. Although the decision belongs to each of us alone, the legal right to do so will come down to who can best rally support for or against the passage of AB 374, the legislation making such decisions lawful.

Although 70 percent of California voters support end-of-life choices (and for Democrats it is closer to 80 percent), the Catholic Church hierarchy through a Republican-directed campaign, have been sending letters, emails and calls to undecided legislators urging and threatening them to oppose this important measure. California Progressives cannot disappoint the people who will need the right provided by this bill. Every e-mail we send Speaks Out in the support of this bill and the right to end our lives with dignity and compassion.

Please contact your assemblymember immediately and insist that he/she make a statement and vote YES once and for all that this right should be afforded to terminally ill patients.

Decisions about our own death and dying belong with each of us and should not be imposed by someone else’s church or religious beliefs. Personal freedom should mean that each of us has the ability to make those choices. Life ending decisions for the terminally ill should be available to each person at that most challenging time of life. AB 374 will ensure that freedom to the terminally ill. That is why we call it COMPASSIONATE CHOICE.
