The short explanation of this alert was:

There are several key initiatives included in the Governor's biennial budget that will improve the lives of many of the one million uninsured Virginians.  We need your help in making certain that these initiatives are not stripped out of the Governor's budget.

There are one million uninsured Virginians – 60% have family income under 200% of the federal poverty line (FPL) ($34,340 / year for a family of three). About 75% of Virginia’s uninsured work or live with someone who works full time – often for small businesses that can’t afford to provide health insurance.

Speak Out and be heard that you support the governor on improving access to health care for low-income Virginians.

Support Expanded Prenatal Care -  The Governor's $2.6 million increase in general fund money for the FAMIS Mom's program, will raise the eligibility of the program to 200% of the federal poverty level, AND for every $1 in state funding invested in FAMIS, Virginia gets $2 in federal funding.  This money will ensure that 400 additional uninsured pregnant women will gain access to necessary and cost-effective prenatal care.

Support Virginia’s Health Safety Net Providers – These providers include free clinics, community health centers, and local health departments, which provide critical health and dental care for people in underserved communities. The Governor included an increase of $10 million - $5 million each year of the biennium - for these essential providers.

Support the VirginiaShare Pilot Program - The budget includes $7.8 million for this innovative proposal that will allow small businesses and their low income, uninsured employees to purchase private health insurance that will cover basic health care up to certain annual limits. The cost will be shared between the employee, the employer and the state.
