PANNA: Pesticide Action Network North America

Campaign Unavailable

We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Inactive -- Pesticide Action Network North America.

The short explanation of this alert was:

Every year U.S. homeowners apply at least 90 million pounds of pesticides to their lawns and gardens, and use has risen rapidly. In fact, pesticides are applied more intensively for lawn care than for farming!

One recent survey reported that when informed about the risks posed by lawn chemicals, nearly 70% of homeowners indicate a preference for non-toxic alternatives. Still, Home Depot and too many other retailers are not responding to the consumer movement away from needlessly toxic insect and weed control, nor are they offering the kind of information and products consumers need to switch to safer and healthier lawn care.

The chemical industry's response: continued lobbying to prevent restrictions on pesticide use and a major new public relations campaign attacking public interest groups for misleading the public about the hazards of pesticides.

PANNA has joined with The National Coalition for Pesticide-Free Lawns to encourage Home Depot, one of the largest U.S. home and garden retailers, to carry a full range of organic, non-toxic lawn care products; train its staff in natural lawn care; provide do-it-yourself materials; and reconsider the sale of "weed and feed" lawn products.

Act Now! Help convince Home Depot to start emphasizing natural, non-toxic lawn and garden products -- send a letter to Brad Shaw, Chair of Home Depot's Environmental Council.

Want to do more? Drop off a letter at a Home Depot near you. We'll help: print, sign and deliver this letter (Adobe PDF) to Home Depot before the end of October. Join the Coalition for Pesticide Free-Lawns by signing the Declaration on the Use of Toxic Lawn Chemicals
