Funding For YOUR Drug Court!

This is an exciting time for drug court! President Obama supports expanding drug courts and the NADCP has set a goal of securing $250 million/year over the next six year for the Department of Justice Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program.

We need your help to make this a reality. We need you to send a letter to the President.

Damon Fuseyamore, a 1998 Brooklyn Treatment Court, has already shared his drug court story with President Obama. Here is some of what he had to say:

I am a father. I am a mechanic with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). I have been sober for over eleven years. And I am a drug court graduate.  Drug court saved my life. (Read the full letter)

Talking Points

Now it is your turn!

1) Tell the President your story and support $250 million for drug court.

2) Mobilize your colleagues, graduates, friends and family to do the same.

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of drug court, the nation's most effective strategy for reducing substance abuse and crime. The time has come to invest $250 million a year in the Department of Justice Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program, essentially what was envisioned in the historic 1994 Biden Crime Bill.

The scientific community has put drug court under the microscope and concluded that drug courts work better than jail or prison, better than probation, and better than treatment alone. Drug courts significantly reduce drug abuse and crime and are less expensive than any other justice strategy. However, as a result of limited funding drug courts serve only 5% of the 1.2 million prison-bound, drug-abusing offenders who research has demonstrated would benefit from the model.

An annual investment of $250 million per year would put a drug court within reach of every American in need and provide an estimated return of $840 million in net benefits from avoided criminal justice and victimization costs alone. Only then can we truly heal drug-dependent offenders, restore their families and break the cycle of drugs and crime once and for all in this nation.
