PANNA: Pesticide Action Network North America

Campaign Unavailable

We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit Inactive -- Pesticide Action Network North America.

The short explanation of this alert was:

The U.S. Toxics Release Inventory Program provides communities with annual data regarding the amounts of toxic chemicals released by companies into surrounding air, land, and water. This information is a critical element of the public's right to know what toxins they are exposed to, and enables communities to hold corporations accountable for their pollution. TRI encourages corporations to reduce their emissions, resulting in safer, healthier conditions for all.

In a blatant give-away to the chemical industry, EPA is now proposing to weaken this highly successful and popular TRI program with three changes that will endanger public health and the environment throughout the country and internationally.

Take Action by sending the letter below!

These changes will:

  • Cut this successful program in half by eliminating every other year of reporting;
  • Allow companies to release ten times more toxins than currently before they must report the details about how much pollution they produce and release;
  • Permit facilities to hide information on low production of persistent bioaccumulative toxins (PBTs), which are dangerous even in very small quantities. (PBTs are chemicals that are toxic, persist in the environment, travel long distances through air and water currents, and build up in through the food chain and in people's bodies.)

Please contact EPA now and tell them keep the Toxics Release Inventory program strong, as it is now. Make your voice count by sending this message to the public docket, where EPA is mandated by law to consider public input before making any changes to this important program.
