On July 1st, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor stepped down from the U.S. Supreme Court -- creating an opening on the Court. Justice O'Connor has repeatedly been the crucial fifth vote protecting religious freedom and a woman's right to choose.

In nominating White House counsel Harriet Miers, George W. Bush has again made one of the most important decisions of his presidency: who to nominate to the highest court in the land. And the U.S. Senate has a crucial role to play during the "advise and consent" process.

What hangs in the balance includes:

* The separation of church and state that protects every American's religious liberty, and helps to make America a welcoming home for American Jews and members of other minority faiths;
* The reproductive freedom of every American woman; and
* Critical social justice programs that provide for America's neediest.

Members of the United States Senate, in a bipartisan way, must represent all Americans by defending religious freedom and protecting the religious practices of all Americans -- even members of minority faiths -- in the coming Supreme Court debate.
