Join Lambda Legal’s national day of action for workplace fairness on May 15, 2007 for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workers and workers living with HIV.

Background

LGBT people and people with HIV continue to face real discrimination in the workplace. In Lambda Legal’s 2005 Workplace Fairness Survey, 39 percent of respondents reported experiencing some form of discrimination or harassment in the workplace during the past five years because of their sexual orientation. Workplace fairness is the number one issue for callers to Lambda Legal’s Help Desk.

But there is still no federal law that expressly forbids workplace discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Only 18 states ban workplace discrimination in the private sector based on sexual orientation, while only eight currently ban discrimination based on gender identity. The federal Americans with Disabilities Act and similar state laws do protect people with HIV from discrimination, but they are often misunderstood or ignored by employers.

Goal

On May 15, 2007, thousands of people across the country will do something to support workplace fairness. By coordinating organizations and individuals to take action on the same day, we will:

  • Educate the public about the harassment and discrimination LGBT people and those living with HIV face at work
  • Increase support for efforts to win legal protections for LGBT employees
  • Activate people to fight for the rights of LGBT and HIV-affected workers
