SLC PULLS OUT! Let's Thank Pataki and Daniels

THE CEMENT PLANT IS STOPPED!
Healthy, economically vibrant waterfronts are supported!
SLC has decided not to appeal the tremendously strong ruling against its Greenport proposal by the NYS Department of State. The company has halted plans for a massive coal-fired cement plant.
Reaction to the DOS decision:

"A deeply affirmative vision of the valley's future."

"A true watershed moment."

"A sound vision for Hudson River communities."

Three cheers for the Department of State!
Now we should thank the decision makers who defended our health and environment -- Gov. George E. Pataki and NYS Sec. of State Randy Daniels. Click on Tell me more to read extended quotes from The New York Times, the Albany Times Union and the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Subject: Thank you for defending our health and environment

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Thank you for a strong decision against the St. Lawrence Cement proposal. You have offered a bold and inspiring vision for the City of Hudson and the entire Hudson Valley. That vision includes people enjoying their waterfronts and sustainable economic activity that builds on, rather than degrades, the world-class cultural and historic assets of the region.

Congratulations to you and your staff for a ruling that has resulted in a complete SLC withdrawal. I support improving the environmental performance and energy efficiency of the company's out-of-date Catskill facility, while reducing its visual impacts on the landscape.

Two cheers for the Hudson River Valley, thanks to you.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Newspapers up and down the valley commented on this momentous decision:

"The Pataki administration deserves the heartfelt thanks of all who care about the Hudson Valley for its ruling this week that a proposed cement plant in the City of Hudson would deal great harm to the region's cultural and environmental integrity while doing little to help the economy. It [the ruling] conveys a deeply affirmative vision of the valley's future."
--The New York Times, Editorial, April 24, 2005

"The decision by New York Secretary of State Randy Daniels last week not to approve the construction of a huge and obtrusive cement making plant...has the potential to be a true watershed moment. Mr. Daniels has looked down river and seen how waterfront revitalization is the driving force behind stronger local economies. That means more jobs, more tax revenue, healthier downtowns and more recreational opportunities along the river."
--Albany Times Union, Editorial, April 24, 2005

"Throughout its 20-page evaluation, the state poignantly harped on how riverside communities are converting their waterfronts from old industrial sites. The state not only rejected this project but offered some broad-reaching principles and a sound vision for Hudson River communities to follow."
--Poughkeepsie Journal, Editorial, April 24, 2005
