Subject: You can't have it both ways
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
As Amtrak supporters, we call on you, Sen. Santorum, to keep your promise.
Pennsylvanians rely on Amtrak for about 4.8 million trips each year and 3000 Pennsylvanians are employed by the rail line.
As Pennsylvania's Senator, you should fight to preserve Amtrak's funding. Instead you pay lip service to Amtrak when you're in Pennsylvania and vote against its funding in Washington. We are calling on you to stop the double-talk.
When you appeared on Meet the Press in February, you promised to fight President Bush's efforts to eliminate Amtrak. And in an op-ed you wrote in the Philadelphia Inquirer on March 25, you promised to support increased funding for Amtrak.
But on March 16, you voted against restoring funding for Amtrak. Not only that, but you said, "I support the current funding levels in the President's proposed budget" - knowing full well that the President's budget includes zero funding for Amtrak!
Sen. Santorum, you are playing politics with an issue of vital importance to Pennsylvanians. Please stop trying to have it both ways and instead focus on truly representing the interests of Pennsylvania.

Amtrak provides a vital transportation link for the state of Pennsylvania and employs over 3,000 hard-working Pennsylvanians.
Senator Rick Santorum promised Pennsylvania that he would support Amtrak funding and oppose the President's efforts to eliminate Amtrak. But it is now clear that Santorum is telling Pennsylvanians that he supports the rail line while actually voting against it in Washington.
On March 16, 2005 Santorum told the Associated Press that, with regard to Amtrak, "I support the current funding levels in the President's proposed budget." But Bush's budget contains no funding for Amtrak! As the Office of Management and Budget noted, Bush's 2006 budget "will not propose continued Federal subsidies for Amtrak." http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2006/transportation.html
On February 27, 2005, Santorum appeared on NBC's Meet the Press and promised that he would fight Bush's effort to eliminate Amtrak, calling the President's proposed budget cuts "not acceptable." But, on March 16, 2005, when it came time to actually vote on the issue, Santorum voted AGAINST restoring Amtrak's funding. [CQ Vote 51]
Nonetheless, Santorum, just days after the vote, penned an op-ed published in the Philadelphia Inquirer on March 25, 2005 in which he said he supports increased Amtrak funding!
Bob Casey believes that as an important mode of transportation and a Pennsylvania employer, Amtrak deserves full funding. And instead of just giving lip service to the issue, Casey will fight to ensure Amtrak receives the funds it needs to continue operating.
