Lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender rights advocates join forces at Power Summit in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Task Force to train more than 175 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender leaders and allies on April 7-9 at largest-ever Power Summit

What: The Power Summit is an intensive training designed to build the political power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community from the ground up. Task Force staff will train more than 175 LGBT leaders and allies from the across the Midwest and the nation — including an estimated 90 participants from Wisconsin — on electoral, legislative and fund-raising strategies for communities facing battles against discriminatory legislation.

Who:: Co-sponsored by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and Fair Wisconsin; activists will attend from Wisconsin and additional states preparing for battles against anti-gay measures (including Idaho, California, Washington state and South Dakota).

When: Friday, April 7- Sunday April 9

Why: Wisconsin will vote on a proposed constitutional ban on marriage and any "substantially similar" legal status for same-sex couples this November. It is among several states facing proposed constitutional bans on marriage and other discriminatory legislation affecting LGBT people. These trainings provide cutting-edge skills and strategies that build political, organizational and community power enabling the defeat of anti-LGBT campaigns.

Media is invited to: Power Summit opening: Friday, April 7, 9-10:30 a.m.
Featuring remarks by Mike Tate, Fair Wisconsin campaign manager, and Matt Foreman, Task Force executive director; door-to-door canvassing through Milwaukee neighborhoods: Saturday, April 8, 10 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

Media must register in advance to attend.

Founded in 1973, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Foundation (the Task Force) was the first national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights and advocacy organization and remains the movement's leading voice for freedom, justice and equality. We work to build the grassroots political strength of our community by training state and local activists and leaders, working to strengthen the infrastructure of state and local allies, and organizing broad-based campaigns to build public support for complete equality for LGBT people. Our Policy Institute, the community's premier think tank, provides research and policy analysis to support the struggle for complete equality. As part of a broader social justice movement, we work to create a world that respects and makes visible the diversity of human expression and identity where all people may fully participate in society. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., we also have offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Cambridge, Mass., and Miami. The Task Force is a 501(c)(3) corporation incorporated in Washington, D.C. Contributions to the Task Force are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
