Minnesota Biomedical Research Program

Biomedical research plays a vital role in helping Minnesota maintain its place as an economic and technology leader. However, the University is running out of quality biomedical research space. If we do not act now, Minnesota's future as a biomedical research powerhouse will be at risk. The University's proposed Minnesota Biomedical Research Program solves this problem. Please tell the Governor and legislators today about this essential program.

Sample Letter for Campaign

Subject: Support the Minnesota Biomedical Research Program

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As a constituent with a strong interest in our state's economic well being, I respectfully urge you to support the University of Minnesota's proposed Minnesota Biomedical Research Program, which is currently under consideration in both legislative chambers.

The biomedical research industry employs 250,000 Minnesotans and generates nearly $620 million in University of Minnesota research funding per year. However, the University is running out of quality research space with which to attract and retain the world's top talent. If we do not act now to maintain our competitive edge, our state's research future will be at risk.

The Minnesota Biomedical Research Program solves this problem. It calls for four new research facilities over the next five years, focusing on medical imaging, cancer, heart disease, infectious disease and neuroscience. This program will create 4,800 high-tech jobs in our state, and will attract $100 million in new research funding each year. The University will fund 20 percent of the $292 million project, and will issue the bonds to make the project possible. A program overview can be found at http://www1.umn.edu/urelate/govrel/2008.html.

The Minnesota Biomedical Research Program has the potential to drive biomedical innovation and economic growth in our state for over a generation. I hope I may count on you to make this program a reality during the 2008 legislative session.

Sincerely,

Campaign Launched:
February 26, 2008

Background Information

Biomedical research plays a vital role in helping Minnesota maintain its place as an economic and technology leader. The state's biomedical and related industries include several world-class corporations, and employ 250,000 Minnesotans. Meanwhile, University research faculty pulled in nearly $620 million in research funding in 2007 alone.

However, the University is running out of quality biomedical research space. If we do not act now, our future as a biomedical research powerhouse will be at risk.

The University's proposed Minnesota Biomedical Research Program solves this problem. It calls for four new research facilities over the next five years, focusing on medical imaging, cancer, heart disease, infectious disease and neuroscience. This program (including the 2006 Medical Biosciences Building) will create 4,800 high-tech jobs in our state, and will attract $100 million in new research funding each year. The University will fund 20 percent of the $292 million project, and will issue the bonds to make the project possible.

We need you to tell your legislators how important this program is for the University of Minnesota and the economic and scientific future of our state. Legislators are deciding right now whether this program will make the cut in 2008. We provide a sample letter below to make it easy to participate—contact your legislators today and say "YES" to the Minnesota Biomedical Research Program!
