Contact the governor about the deficit and the U

Minnesota faces a revenue shortfall for the 2010-11 biennium of $4.8 billion -- a drop of nearly 14 percent -- plus a deficit of $426 million for the remainder of this fiscal year.

The U receives approximately 25 percent of its operating revenue from the state. The pending deficit could have a major impact on academics, research and workforce quality for our students, faculty and staff.

Contact Governor Pawlenty now to remind him that the U of M's health is essential to Minnesota's economic recovery.

Subject: Governor Pawlenty, help the U help our state

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Dear Governor Pawlenty:

When it comes time for you to address Minnesota's budget problems, I urge you to maintain the fiscal and competitive integrity of the U of M.

The University's alumni, students, faculty and staff play a key role in keeping our state exceptionally strong and prosperous. Our knowledge and research base leads to new ideas and products that fuel Minnesota's economy. The U trains doctors, communicators, engineers, teachers, scientists, entrepreneurs, lawyers, and global citizens. I wouldn't be where I am today without the U of M.

The best budget solutions for our state will keep the U strong so that all of us may be stronger. President Bruininks said it well: "The path out of Minnesota's current crisis, and a return to a vibrant and growth-oriented economy, lies directly through the classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and halls of our great educational institutions." Please develop a budget proposal for the next two years that preserves this vision and makes this reality possible.

Sincerely,
