Letters to the editor: tell your community the U matters

Please take 10 minutes to write to only one local paper and remind your neighbors how important it is that we balance our state budget without diminishing the U's economic and academic value to the state.

Existing state budget proposals reduce higher education funding significantly, and fill the gap for the next two years with temporary federal stimulus dollars that can't be used for ongoing costs. The long-term consequences for the U's academic, research and public programs could be tremendous.

The U of M knows belt-tightening is a part of life in today's economic climate. We recognize our responsibility to plan ahead to help address today's budget problems, but the U's long-term capacity to serve this state must not be compromised.

Background Information

State leaders are considering a host of budget proposals that could put the U years behind at a time when Minnesota needs our economic and academic resources most. Writing a letter to the editor is an excellent way to let your neighbors know how much is at stake for all Minnesotans this year.
