UAN's Humane Education Ambassador Reader (HEAR) Program helps children explore the human-animal bond through stories and discussion. HEAR volunteers visit after-school programs, libraries, classrooms, animal shelters and youth groups to read to children and lead discussions -- helping children develop critical thinking skills and empathy.
Training includes:
- brief overview of the history of humane education
- using questions to generate critical thinking
- tips for reading aloud
- the relationship between reading and developing empathy
- implementing HEAR discussion guides
Sign up on this page to indicate your interest in learning more about the process to become a HEAR volunteer. Scheduled in 2008 are training opportunities in Sacramento, California and Washington, D.C. We welcome interest from all regions of the United States and Canada and will base future training locations on this interest.
