Bioidentical hormones under fire

In January, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered seven pharmacies to stop making "false and misleading" claims about custom-made "bioidentical" hormones for menopausal symptoms.

Makers of bioidentical hormones say they are tailored to a woman's individual needs, based on the contents of her saliva. Women began turning to these custom-made treatments after a 2002 study linked traditional brand-name drugs, like Premarin and Prempro, to an increased risk of heart attack, breast cancer, stroke and other deadly diseases.

Wyeth 4-2 in lawsuits

Wyeth faces more than 5,300 lawsuits filed by women who claim the company's Prempro and Premarin hormone drugs caused them serious health problems, namely breast cancer. So far six cases have gone to trial; Wyeth has won four and lost two. In one case, the jury ruled in favor of the plaintiff, but the case was later declared a mistrial. A Minneapolis judge dismissed another case in Minnesota,
ruling that the plaintiff had failed to offer any “scientifically valid evidence” supporting her claim. The four women who won the two legal battles have been awarded almost $60 million in damages.

Rescue Update

Homes for Horses Coalition launches new Web site

Last July, UAN and 20 other organizations met in Washington, D.C. to discuss challenges facing the horse rescue community and the feasibility of an accreditation program for horse rescue groups and sanctuaries.

Last week, the Animal Welfare Institute, a leading member of the Homes for Horses Coalition, announced the creation of a new coalition Web site. It offers a wealth of information and resources on topics like horse slaughter and euthanasia, and features adoption success stories. The site also publicizes standards of operation for horse rescue organizations and creates a platform for the coalition's long-term goals.

With this new site, more horse rescue organizations are invited to apply to join the coalition and attend the next conference in July with UAN.

Over-herd

Over-herd is an excerpt from a post on our Premarin Awareness Campaign online community.

Posted by Dana Stark:

“I'm so glad I found this site! I am in Southern California and adopted a PMU yearling colt about two-and-a-half years ago. I am so glad I decided to adopt him instead of getting a horse I could ride right away. Raising him has been the best experience. Within a week of getting him home and being tempted by goodies and gentle scratches from my three girls and me, he decided we were pretty cool and has been in our pockets ever since! He is so easy-going and he is soooooo beautiful. I love him so much and highly recommend PMU adoption.”

Legislative Watch

Bill to publicly fund horse slaughter rejected in South Dakota

In January, a South Dakota state senator proposed a bill that would have allowed up to $1 million in state economic development loans to establish a horse slaughtering plant in the state. The Senate Agriculture Committee rejected the bill, although a number of committee members said they voted against it for procedural reasons, not in response to the flood of e-mails and phone calls they received from horse advocates around the country.

Currently no horse slaughter plants are operating in the United States. South Dakota Sen. Frank Kloucek said he introduced the bill because he believes hundreds of thousands of unwanted horses are languishing, either at taxpayers’ expense, or at the owners’ expense, and many are being abandoned. He claims that South Dakotans support the bill, despite the Agriculture Committee vote and the national outcry.
