Help Support the New Gopher Stadium Proposal!

We need your help to bring Gopher football back to campus. The University and a bipartisan group of legislators have come up with a promising new plan to fund an on campus Gopher stadium. This exciting new plan should help us move closer to bringing Gopher football back to campus. This plan would accomplish two things: create a large metropolitan area nature reserve accessible to the public and provide funding for a University of Minnesota on-campus football stadium.

This legislation, which began moving through legislative committees this week, will have a lasting, positive impact on our state's quality of life. This new proposal is a giant step forward in our efforts to build an on campus stadium. The governor, as well as the bipartisan group of legislators that worked on this proposal, are highly supportive of this effort. We hope that all legislators can unite and pass this legislation quickly.

This bill was passed by the House Capital Investment Committee on Wednesday and will be heard in the House Ways and Means Committee early in the week of April 3rd. Your Representative sits on this committee and will make decisions about the future of a Gopher football stadium. Please contact your Representative below and urge them to support our Gopher stadium bill.

Personal letters and e-mails are one of the most effective ways to influence elected officials. Personalize your email by adding why you think Gopher football belongs on campus. We have provided sample e-mail text and subject line below that you can use to help you tailor your own letter.

Subject: Pass the Gopher Stadium Bill!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As your constituent, I am writing to ask you to support the University of Minnesota's football stadium bill. This proposal is a "win-win" for the University, the state, and all Minnesotans. It will create a large metropolitan area nature reserve accessible to the public and provide funding for a University of Minnesota stadium.

You and your fellow Ways and Means Committee members can help to ensure that the Gopher stadium bill moves forward. Please help us bring Gopher football back to the University of Minnesota campus by supporting this bill.

Sincerely,

Campaign Launched:
March 31, 2006

Background Information

This plan would accomplish two things: create a large metropolitan area nature reserve accessible to the public and provide funding for a University of Minnesota on-campus football stadium.

As part of the proposed legislation, the University would agree to transfer to the state 2,840 acres of UMore Park property near Rosemount in Dakota County. This environmentally valuable land will become permanently protected by the state for public use. The University will retain permanent rights to use the land for our research, education and outreach mission.

The cost to the state will be approximately $9.4 million per year for 25 years, which we will use to pay part of the cost of our new stadium. Fortunately, this level of funding is more than the University’s original financing plan and will allow us to cut the proposed stadium student fee in half - from $50 per semester to $25 per semester.

Each day that passes without legislation hinders fundraising efforts, threatens the University’s ability to remain on schedule for opening and adds to the total cost. It is critical that the Legislature pass the stadium legislation in the 2006 session to ensure that the new Gopher stadium becomes a reality.
