Darfur: Stop the Genocide

As President Bill Clinton once said, "When you can make a difference, you should."  We can and must make a difference in the Darfur region in Sudan, where ethnic cleansing and genocide are underway.

It's time to pull together a real policy for Darfur -- and the United States must take the lead.

If you agree that now is the time to act, I invite you to write President Bush and your Members of Congress urging them to take action now.

This is a problem where America can make a difference, and we should.  With your help we will.  Thank you.

Subject: We must stop the genocide in Darfur!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

We can and must make a difference in the Darfur region in Sudan, where ethnic cleansing and genocide are underway.

It's time to pull together a real policy for Darfur -- and the United States must take the lead. Only bold action can put a stop to this genocide.

The first step must be real diplomacy, pushed by the United States and the European Union in concert with the African Union and local national leaders. It is only by taking this unifying first step that we can assemble the broad coalition we will need to end the genocide.

This should be followed by the declaration as part of an agreed policy that the U.S. is going to be at the heart of a NATO-led protection force for refugees, and that it is going to work with the United Nations and pull together an international coalition -- built around NATO -- that will help maintain stability and protect human life in the western region of Sudan.

The Sudanese government won't like it, but we can deal with the Sudanese government. Some other governments won't support it, but we can deal with these governments if the President of the United States shows the leadership that he is charged to demonstrate in his office.

This is Darfur, and the time for action is now.

The world must not once again stay silent while murder on massive scale continues unabated. Please seek the deployment of NATO troops to stop the slaughter of innocent civilians in Darfur as soon as possible.

This is a problem where America can make a difference, and we should. With your help we will. Thank you.

Sincerely,
